The fast bowler Set to Play a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's Ashes series.

There were concerns that Cummins might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Perth.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about his chances of being involved.

"We know that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations involved, not only his injury, but additional elements," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he's going to play a key capacity. Ideally it's the first Test. If not, we'll reassess."

Injury History

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand last month after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

He has a history of back injuries, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from several home seasons in a short span.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the contest.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and mentioned that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the opening match as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs anyway. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for another day, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
